First Flight I'll never forget the first time I flew an RC airplane. I was invited to a local RC club's "Fun Fly Day" event by a friend who was a member. I really didn't want to go but he asked me several times before to go flying with him and I always made an excuse not to go. This time I decided to go just so he'd stop asking me. There were a lot of planes at the Fun Fly and I had to admit they were cool to look at, but I was bored watching them fly. I was just about to leave when my friend came and asked if I'd like to fly his plane. I said, "No thanks. I don't know how to fly and I would just crash it." He explained that I would have a radio hooked up to his and he would get the plane up in the air and then switch the controls over to me. If it looked as though I was getting into trouble he would take back control in an instant, so there was little fear of the plane crashing. I said OK and we did a ground check of the plane and he explained to me how to the radio controls worked. I was in the Air Force and had been around planes so I understood how the ailerons, rudder and elevators made the plane move, so off we went into the wild blue yonder. He took the plane up about "three mistakes high" (high enough so the plane can be recovered from a flying boo-boo) and then switched control of the plane over to me. Flying that plane was the most fun I'd had in a long time. When he flipped the buddy cord switch on his transmitter and I started flying that plane, he also switched on a love of flying that has been with me ever since.
